Wealth Hidden Across the Sea: The Panama Papers and Mossack Fonseca, 1977–2018

The Panama Papers is a massive investigative reporting project launched in April 2016 by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and others, based on more than 11.5 million internal documents leaked from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. The documents contained information spanning from 1977 to the end of 2015 and revealed connections to more than 214,000 offshore entities, as well as politicians, high-net-worth individuals, and corporate executives. The leak of the Panama Papers brought to light the true nature of numerous offshore entities that Mossack Fonseca had helped establish or manage. While offshore entities themselves are not illegal, mechanisms that obscure the identity of beneficial owners carry the risk of being exploited for asset concealment, tax evasion, corruption, and money laundering. The leaked documents revealed connections between politicians, public officials, and corporate executives from around the world and these highly secretive entities. Following the scandal, investigations and regulatory overhauls proceeded in various countries, and Mossack Fonseca closed its overseas offices one after another. Ultimately, the firm ceased operations in 2018. The Panama Papers were a scandal that revealed to the world the existence of a vast network—comprising banks, law firms, and shell companies—behind the flow of wealth across national borders.

Children’s Voices Echoing Through the Maruki Cabin: Kayoko Asakawa and “The Song of the Maruki Cabin,” 1972–1989

Kayoko Asakawa was an author in the world of children’s literature who focused on children’s lives and reading habits. In this collection, she is introduced alongside works such as *The Song of Maruki Cottage*, revealing her approach of translating everyday experiences and social realities into stories from a child’s perspective. *The Song of Maruki Cottage* was published in October 1972 as part of Makishoten’s “New Boys’ and Girls’ Educational Library” series, with illustrations by Shinpei Kitajima. The 245-page work was revised in 1975 and republished in 1978, confirming its enduring popularity. Furthermore, records of the children’s literature movement in Nagano Prefecture note that *The Song of the Maruki Cabin* was published in fiscal year 1972, illustrating the vibrant creative activity in regional children’s literature at the time. In later years, Asakawa also authored books on reading aloud to infants, demonstrating that her interest extended beyond simply writing stories to creating opportunities for children to encounter books. *The Song of the Maruki Cabin* is regarded as a work of children’s literature that quietly conveys the realities of society and human life while cherishing children’s everyday sensibilities.

Youth on the Silver Screen: Yoko Tsukasa and Japanese Cinema of the 1950s, 1954–1959

Yoko Tsukasa was born in Tottori Prefecture in 1934 and made her film debut in 1954 with *Do Not Die, My Love*. From then on, she gained popularity as a Toho teen idol and became one of the leading actresses of the 1950s, a period when postwar Japanese cinema reached its peak in terms of both audience numbers and the number of films produced. In 1955, she appeared in *Fufu Zenzai*, directed by Shiro Toyota, co-starring with Hisaya Morishige and Chikage Awashima. In the 1958 film *The City of Love*, she starred alongside Akira Takarada in a glamorous urban melodrama, embodying the romantic lives and sensibilities of young women. Yoko Tsukasa’s charm lay in her combination of demure grace and cosmopolitan sophistication. Amid a Japanese society heading toward a period of rapid economic growth, she naturally adapted not only to the role of a homemaker but also to a new image of women who chose independence and romance. Her filmography from the 1950s served as a foundation for her subsequent work in films by Yasujirō Ozu and Mikio Naruse, making her a defining figure of the golden age of postwar Japanese cinema.

Reflecting on the Nation Through the Memory of Tanks: Ryotaro Shiba and Postwar Thought, 1945–1996

Ryotaro Shiba’s view of history was not merely a means of recreating the past; it was shaped by the question of how the Japanese people, having experienced war, would reevaluate their nation and society after defeat. Shiba himself saw the end of the war while serving in an Army tank unit, and against the backdrop of this experience, he repeatedly pondered why Japan in the early Shōwa period had lost its sense of rationality and plunged into a reckless war. After the war, he worked as a newspaper reporter before becoming a writer; while depicting the Bakumatsu and Meiji periods, he continued to question the relationship between the Japanese people and the nation. While *The Clouds Above the Hill* depicts the formation of the Meiji state, the fact that he did not portray the Pacific War itself as a subject of a full-length novel is also an important clue to understanding his view of history. In his later essays and interviews, he broadened his discourse to include land issues, globa lization, civilization, nature, the Emperor, and the Constitution, transforming the very act of writing history into a critique of postwar Japan. Shiba’s literature can be read not only as historical fiction but also as a form of contemporary thought that reflects on postwar society through the lens of wartime memory.

From the Stage to the Silver Screen: Chikage Awashima and Shochiku Films, 1950–1963

Chikage Awashima was an actress who, after a successful career as a “musume-yaku” (female lead) in the Takarazuka Revue, made her debut with Shochiku Films in 1950. Her film debut was in *Tenya-Wanya*, directed by Minoru Shibuya. In this film, which depicted the chaos of postwar society and the human warmth of rural life, she left a vivid impression and won the Best Actress Award at the 1st Blue Ribbon Awards. Shochiku’s official records also confirm that this was Awashima’s film debut. Throughout the 1950s, Awashima portrayed a wide range of roles, from cosmopolitan, sophisticated women to down-to-earth women living within their families and local communities. In the 1954 film *Early Youth*, she played a high school teacher, and in the 1955 film *The Story of Shūzen-ji*, she appeared in a period drama. At that time, Shochiku was producing films such as *Tokyo Story*, *Your Name*, and *Twenty-Four Eyes*, helping to sustain the golden age of Japanese cinema. At the heart of this movement, Chikage Awashima moved effortlessly between comedies, melodramas, and literary films, bringing the dignity and approachability she had cultivated on the stage to the silver screen. She continued to work in television and theater for many years afterward, remaining an actress who consistently reflected the changing image of postwar Japanese women through her performances.

Temporary Shelters in the Mountains and Fields: The Lives of the Seburi and the Sanka—From the Late Meiji Period to the Showa 30s

In *Sanka Yobi*, there are survey items regarding “Seburi” that serve as clues to understanding the lives of the Sanka. “Seburi” has traditionally been understood as a term referring to the makeshift huts or tent-like temporary dwellings that the Sanka erected while moving through mountainous areas or along waterways. The *Dictionary of Folklore*, published in 1951, also describes the Sanka as a people who traveled using these makeshift huts and tents known as “Seburi.” Their way of life differed from that of settled rural communities; it is believed they moved from place to place as needed. Records indicate that men engaged in activities such as catching river fish, while women worked on bamboo crafts—such as sieves, baskets, and winnowing trays—and that through these activities, they interacted with the surrounding rural communities. The “seburi” was not merely a place to sleep, but rather a hub for family life and work—a living space that existed at the intersection of nomadic and sedentary lifestyles. Hiroshi Misumi’s *Social Materials on the Sanka* includes documentary photographs, a map of their nationwide distribution, and a glossary of Sanka terminology, making it a vital resource for understanding the image of the Sanka that took shape from the first half of the 20th century through the postwar period. However, later research has criticized some of Hiroshi Misumi’s records as containing fictional elements or dramatization; therefore, the depiction of their way of life—including the seburi—must be examined carefully by comparing historical sources. Therefore, the seburi is not merely a unique form of dwelling that has disappeared; it is a symbolic presence that prompts us to consider how mobile people lived—and how they were documented by those around them—as modern Japan transformed into a society that regarded sedentary life as the norm. The very fact that it appears as a research topic in *Sanka Yobi* indicates that researchers at the time regarded living spaces as an important subject of observation.

The Mountain Embracing Hell and the Pure Land: Mount Tateyama and Mountain Worship from the Heian to the Meiji Periods

Mount Tateyama, a symbol of Toyama, has long been revered as one of Japan’s most sacred mountains. As early as the Heian period, it was recognized as a mountain for Shugendō ascetic practices, and by the Edo period, it had formed a vast religious sphere of influence that drew pilgrims from across the country. On Mount Tateyama, the main peak, Mount O, was regarded as the Pure Land of Bliss, while Jigoku Valley—where traces of volcanic activity remain—was likened to Hell. By walking through the mountains, people experienced the afterlife while still alive and prayed for rebirth in the Pure Land. The Tateyama Mandala visually conveyed this worldview. The opening of Mount Tateyama, pilgrimages through the mountains, the Pure Land, Hell, and the Fuhashi Kanjō-e ceremony were all depicted within a single painting, and the monks of Mount Tateyama spread the faith by explaining the images in various regions. The Mount Tateyama Mandala was not merely a map; it was a religious artifact that presented the entire mountain as a narrative of death and rebirth. Furthermore, until the Meiji era, Mount Tateyama was off-limits to women, who were not permitted to climb the mountain for pilgrimage. Instead, at Ashikuraji Temple, the Fuhashi Kanjo-e ceremony was held for the salvation of women. The ritual of crossing the bridge is believed to have symbolized the process of passing from this world into the afterlife and being reborn. The Mount Tateyama faith was a religious culture representative of the Hokuriku region, linking mountain worship, conceptions of hell, the Pure Land of Bliss, and memorial services for the dead.

The Shinigami’s Blade Slices Through Youth: BLEACH 2004–2026

BLEACH is one of the defining TV anime series of the 2000s. The story centers on Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who can see spirits; after meeting the Shinigami Rukia Kuchiki, he becomes a substitute Shinigami. Traveling between the human world and the Soul Society, he becomes embroiled in battles against spiritual entities known as Hollows and other Shinigami. BLEACH is distinguished by its ability to blend traditional themes—such as the afterlife and spirits—with coming-of-age stories, sword fights, and camaraderie among friends, all in the style of a shonen manga. Each character is equipped with a unique Zanpakutō and set of techniques, and the story’s universe expanded over the course of the long-running series through arcs such as the Soul Society Arc, the Arrancar Arc, and the Substitute Shinigami Disappearance Arc. The TV series aired from October 2004 to March 2012, and theatrical films were produced thereafter. Furthermore, in October 2022, the anime adaptation of *BLEACH: The Thousand-Year Blood War*, which corresponds to the final chapter of the original manga, began airing. The original series spanned 366 episodes and is known as a long-running series. By 2026, the series will have progressed to “The Tale of the Calamity,” the final season of the “Millennium Blood War Arc,” marking more than 20 years since the TV anime premiered in 2004. BLEACH is not merely a story about spiritual battles; it is a work that weaves themes such as the living and the dead, memory and loss, and responsibility toward one’s comrades into stylish visuals, music, and sword-based combat. It can be considered one of the works that symbolizes the era of the 2000s, when *Shonen Jump*-style anime evolved into long-running series and gained widespread acceptance overseas.

Tires Returned to the Steel Furnace: The Resource Recycling Pioneered by the Hirohata Steel Works, 1998–2008

At Nippon Steel’s Hirohata Steel Works, efforts to recycle scrap tires began in 1998. The underlying concept was to fully utilize scrap tires as raw materials and fuel in the steelmaking process, rather than simply disposing of them through incineration or landfilling. The Hirohata Steel Works utilized the SMP (Cold Iron Source Melting) process, which began operations in 1993, to use the carbon contained in waste tires as a reducing agent and fuel, while recovering the steel cord as a source of iron. Documents from 1999 describe a system in which waste tires were fed into the steelmaking process, with carbon black used as a reducing agent, iron content as raw material for molten iron, and synthetic rubber converted into gas. Subsequently, gasification recycling facilities were also introduced, establishing a system capable of recycling oil, gas, carbon residue, and even iron. According to a report by Nippon Steel, the company built a system capable of processing approximately 120,000 metric tons of scrap tires annually, reaching a scale that accounted for more than 10 percent of the scrap tires generated in Japan. This system—which returns tires to steel mills not as waste but as a resource containing iron, carbon, and energy—has become a symbolic example of circular recycling that bridges different industries.

The Company That Changed the Fate of Oil: Daiseki and the Boom in the Recycling Business, 1958–2000

Founded in 1958, Daiseki expanded its business from the manufacture of lubricating oils to the recycling of waste oil. In 1972, the company obtained a license for industrial waste disposal in Nagoya City and began shifting its focus away from simply disposing of waste oil and sludge toward utilizing them as recycled fuel and resources. In 1995, the company began trading its shares over-the-counter, and in August 1999, it was listed on the Second Section of both the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Nagoya Stock Exchange. An environmental business report from that time noted that it was the first listing by an industrial waste intermediate treatment operator and reported that the environmental division constituted the core of the company’s business. Amid growing concerns over a shortage of final disposal sites, the company identified waste volume reduction and resource recovery as growth areas and was preparing to embark on environmental analysis—such as soil contamination surveys—as well as research and development of new treatment technologies. This approach—viewing waste not as a burden but as a resource—is a prime example of how environmental measures and corporate growth can be effectively linked.
