According to the estimate of industrial waste discharged and treated (as of the end of March 2000) released by the Ministry of the Environment, the residual capacity of final disposal sites for industrial waste nationwide was 183.94 million cubic meters, a decrease of about 3% from the previous year, but the residual life, calculated by dividing the residual capacity by final disposal sites for the year, was 3.7 years, up 0.4 years from the previous year. The amount of waste brought to the final disposal facility in FY1999 was 50 million tons, down about 14% from the previous year. Nevertheless, the situation remains severe.
