The Japan Meteorological Agency has released the average temperatures for the world and Japan for 2001. The average temperature for the world was 0.4°C above the normal (1971-2000 average), the second warmest in more than 100 years of observation. Japan, on the other hand, was only 0.23°C above normal, the 12th warmest on record. However, the trend of high temperatures in the world and Japan has become more pronounced since around 1990, with the world's record high in 1998 (+0.66°C above normal) and Japan's record high in 1990 (+1.04°C above normal).
