PFAS Pollution in the Tama Region of Tokyo - Summary
In 1997, PFAS contamination caused by industrial effluents and fire extinguishing chemicals was discovered in the Tama region of Tokyo. In the 2000s, regulations were tightened and sources of contamination were identified in industrial parks and the Tama River; in the 2010s, international collaboration and the introduction of remediation technologies resulted in the removal of more than 85% of the contaminated water. By the 2020s, the situation is improving, but health risks and agricultural impacts remain an issue. The government and municipalities are continuing further studies and measures, and the case of the Tama region represents progress in Japan's environmental policy.
