Invisible scales - security is a trade-off

Seeking security always means sacrificing something. In the security world, this inevitable relationship is called a "trade-off. Increasing convenience reduces security, while tight security compromises freedom and comfort. The decision on how much to sacrifice cannot be measured by numbers, but depends on the individual, the organization, and the culture. Therefore, tradeoffs are a matter of subjective choice, and there is no objective correct answer.

In "Why Security Was Broken," Bruce Schneier portrays security as "a matter of subjective trade-offs," not just a technical system. Security measures are an activity of human judgment, of how to maintain an equilibrium that oscillates between the values of cost, convenience, freedom, and privacy. What is "security" to one person is "inconvenience" to another, and what is "defense" to the state is "surveillance" to the individual. The boundary exists only in the human mind.

Another point that Schneier emphasizes is that "perceived safety" does not equal "actual safety. People are influenced by fear and the social atmosphere to incorrectly assess risk. For example, excessive fear of airline accidents while downplaying the dangers of traffic accidents or information leaks is the result of a psychological trade-off. True security means a rational attitude that goes beyond this illusion and calmly estimates the probability of occurrence and impact.

Moreover, technological advances create a series of new tradeoffs. The Internet has extended freedom of information, but it has also taken away privacy; AI and the cloud have increased surveillance and dependence at the expense of increased efficiency. Where the balance between convenience and danger lies - the decision is left to human subjectivity. Safety is not a fixed barrier, but a dynamic equilibrium that is constantly being reconstructed.

Security is not about building the strongest defense. Rather, consciously choosing what to protect and what to let go of is the true defense. Understanding the trade-offs and being prepared to accept the cost of those trade-offs - this is the mature form of security in today's society. To protect is not to fear, but to choose after careful consideration.
