The Dark Side of Waste Piles Up in Yokohama City - April 1995
Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, has established guidelines for the disposal of construction by-products generated during construction work. However, in 1995, some construction companies disregarded these regulations and illegally dumped construction waste materials in mountains, forests, and vacant lots. In particular, hazardous materials, including asbestos, were left without proper disposal, increasing the risk of environmental pollution and health hazards to local residents.
The City of Yokohama has informed citizens of the measures to be taken when illegal dumping is discovered. In response to this incident, the city ordered the removal of waste materials from the illegal dumping site and imposed a fine on the illegal operator. Furthermore, as measures to prevent recurrence, the city is working to strengthen its waste management system and monitoring system to ensure the safety of local residents and environmental preservation.
