Kushiro Marsh, Hokkaido - A Model Case of Nature Restoration (June 2004)
In the late 1990s, the national government and local communities began a cooperative restoration project in Kushiro Marsh, Hokkaido, where wetlands had shrunk due to development and the expansion of agricultural land. Restoration of meandering waterways and removal of invasive alien plants have been promoted, and a wide variety of plants and animals have been confirmed to inhabit the wetlands. The project is an example of environmental conservation that has received high international acclaim.
