The Great Global Afforestation Plan and Efforts to Combat Desertification
In 1997, the "World Afforestation Program" was proposed to combat desertification, and afforestation activities in Nigeria and Mongolia have progressed. In Japan, rooftop greening in urban areas and restoration of satoyama in the Yoshino region of Nara Prefecture are progressing, and companies are actively participating. in the 2020s, approximately 12 million hectares of land will be lost to desertification each year. toyota boshoku is planting approximately 80,000 trees in inner Mongolia, and ITOCHU Corporation is planting approximately 250,000 hectares in Brazil. Japan's Ministry of the Environment also supports sustainable pastureland use in Mongolia. These efforts are contributing to the prevention of desertification, carbon dioxide absorption, and biodiversity conservation, but further international cooperation is required.
