Memories of Time and Machinery Left in the Soil, Early 2000s
The reason why Shibuya Industry (Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture) started working on soil purification technology was due to the expansion of the soil contamination problem that emerged nationwide from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. The enforcement of the Soil Contamination Countermeasures Law in 2003 forced companies to take action, but conventional excavation and high-temperature treatment were costly and difficult to implement in many cases in rural areas. Shibuya Industry applied its liquid control and separation technologies cultivated in beverage filling equipment and established a low-cost, practical remediation method in cooperation with a major construction company. This attempt to take advantage of the tightening of regulations as a new business opportunity can be positioned as an example that symbolizes the trend toward environmental business in the early 2000s.
