Evolution of a Project to Utilize Unutilized Fish in Gamagori, Aichi Prefecture
In 2011, a fish processing company in Gamagori City launched a business to utilize unused fish. Approximately 150 tons of unused fish are processed annually and commercialized as frozen foods and prepared foods. The fishermen's profits have increased by about 15%, food loss has been reduced, and 50 tons of CO2 emissions have been reduced annually. 200 tons of fish will be processed by the 2020s, and high value-added products using collagen and fish oil will be developed. The introduction of renewable energy and the development of biomass fuels are progressing, resulting in a 60-ton CO₂ reduction. Local economy has also been revitalized through the holding of tourism events. The Gamagori project is highly regarded as a model case of sustainable fishing.
