History of coastal erosion and disaster prevention measures along the Xian Taiwan coast (1997-2020s)

Coastal erosion became more serious along the Sendai coast of Miyagi Prefecture in the 1990s, leading to the construction of seawalls, artificial reefs, and detached breakwaters. In the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, disaster prevention forests along the coast of Sendai were washed away by the tsunami, and the restoration of disaster prevention forests and the construction of wave-resistant seawalls were promoted.

In the 2020s, sea level rise and increased extreme weather events due to climate change became new challenges. Erosion rates increased in Yamamoto Town and Iwanuma City, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism introduced a real-time monitoring system. Mitsubishi Materials Corporation and Kajima Corporation are developing beach stabilization and coastal ecosystem restoration technology. Going forward, sustainable coastal management and disaster prevention measures in cooperation with local communities must be strengthened.
