Tenma, a genius neurosurgeon, saves the life of Johan, a dying boy, at a German hospital. However, his decision defied the hospital administration, which had ordered him to prioritize surgery for the mayor. Soon, a series of inexplicable incidents begins to occur around Tenma, and nine years later, he learns that Johan, the boy he saved, is in fact a terrifying entity orchestrating a string of murders. From there, the story evolves into a long journey in which Tenma pursues Johan while grappling with his own medical ethics. Are all human lives equal? When a life saved leads to many deaths, to what extent should a doctor bear responsibility? The work is not a simple clash between good and evil; it delves into the process by which humans transform into monsters, as well as memory, loneliness, education, and societal violence. The anime adaptation is based on Naoki Urasawa’s manga and was produced by Madhouse.
