The quest for security always consists of sacrificing something. Security is a subjective question of how to balance the values of convenience, freedom, comfort, and privacy, and there is no absolute right answer. Bruce Schneier, in "Why Security Was Broken," positioned security as "a matter of subjective trade-offs. Perceived security is different from actual security, and fear and social atmospheres distort people's judgments. Technological advances have also created new tradeoffs, with the Internet and AI bringing convenience but increasing the dangers of surveillance and dependence. The essence of security is not about building the strongest defense, but about making rational decisions to choose what to protect and what to let go. To protect is not to fear, but to choose the most appropriate equilibrium within reality.
