History and Current Status of Dioxin Contamination in Miyoshi Town, Saitama Prefecture
In December 2000, dioxin levels exceeding the standard—1,500 pg-TEQ/g—were detected in the vicinity of an industrial waste treatment facility in Miyoshi Town, Saitama Prefecture, prompting the launch of an investigation. The contamination was attributed to improper management of incineration ash and plastic waste, and both the prefectural government and residents demanded swift action due to concerns about health risks. Monitoring has continued since 2021, with dioxin concentrations in soil reaching a maximum of 43 pg-TEQ/g and 230 pg-TEQ/g in riverbed sediments; however, all levels remain within regulatory limits. Overall, dioxin emissions in the prefecture have been reduced by more than 90% compared to the 1990s, and measures to maintain environmental standards are currently being implemented.
