Flower of Chivalry: Rikuzo Fukuhara and the Sumiyoshikai Genealogy (Showa - Heisei Era)
Rikuzo Fukuhara is a little-known figure, but his existence became widely known through Shigeki Yamadaira's biography "Yu-Yu Yakuza Biography: Rikuzo Fukuhara". In this work, Fukuhara, who was called a "child prodigy" in his youth, describes his path from the Gurentai to the world of chivalry, through the fourth generation of the Takinogawa family, to honorary advisor to the Sumiyoshi-kai. His way of life, with its respect for bushido, was not that of a mere gang leader, but that of a "man of the Showa era" who was a man of principle. Sumiyoshi-kai is a designated crime syndicate formed in 1958, based in Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo, with its main base in the Kanto region. It is characterized by its operation as a federation, rather than a centralized organization like the Yamaguchigumi. Fukuhara's status as an honorary advisor indicates trust in his character and coordination skills, and tells us that he was valued as a symbolic figure. Although public records are scant, he was
a quietly respected figure in the underworld.
