### History and Current Status of Small Hydroelectric Power Generation at Kinpu Dam, Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima Prefecture (December 2003)
The Kanamine Dam in Minami-Satsuma City, Kagoshima Prefecture, started operation in December 2003. Using water from the Manose River system, the dam generates power using a cross-flow turbine with a maximum output of 170 kW and an effective drop-off of 41 meters.
The plant supports local electricity demand and contributes to sustainable development by selling surplus power. In Kyushu, small-scale hydroelectric power generation using agricultural waterways and other resources is spreading in Kumamoto, Kagoshima, and Miyazaki.
The Kinpu Dam has generated economic benefits of approximately 600 million yen, but in some cases the start of construction of related facilities has been delayed due to water rights negotiations and other issues.
Along with wind and solar power, Kagoshima Prefecture is promoting small-scale hydroelectric power generation, which can provide a stable 24-hour supply.
