Progress in Sustainable Community Development in Kuzumaki Town, Iwate Prefecture - 2020

Kuzumaki Town, Iwate Prefecture, established the Livestock Development Corporation in 1976 to promote green tourism. The town revitalized the local economy with its specialty dairy products and nature experiences, achieving sales of approximately 1.1 billion yen in fiscal 2005 and winning the "Green Tourism Award 2006". However, the number of dairy farmers has been declining, decreasing from 270 in 2005 to 130 in 2015. To address this issue, the "New Kuzumaki-style Dairy Farming Concept" was formulated, and efforts were made to develop an efficient production system and foster new farmers. 2020's saw the introduction of wind power and biomass power generation, and the utilization of renewable energy. In addition, the region is developing as a model region that balances environmental conservation and economic growth by expanding hands-on tourism and utilizing local development cooperation teams.
