Tokyo Metropolitan Government Caught Violating the Waste Disposal and Public Cleansing Law - November 2023
In November 2023, XYZ Recycle Co. of Hachioji City, Tokyo, was caught violating the Waste Disposal and Public Cleansing Law. The company was found to have illegally dumped approximately 50 tons of industrial waste from its manufacturing process into a riverbed without properly disposing of it. After receiving a report from a local resident, the Environmental Bureau conducted an investigation and confirmed that the abandoned waste contained asphalt, plastic, and hazardous substances. As a result, XYZ Recycling Co. was fined 3 million yen and given guidance on how to prevent recurrence. This incident served as an opportunity to raise environmental awareness in the community, and the Environmental Bureau is working to strengthen its monitoring system and reaffirm the importance of proper disposal. As corporate environmental responsibility is being called for more and more, proper waste management is becoming more important.
