Patuha Geothermal Power Plant: History and Current Status (2011–2024)
Located in Garut Regency, West Java, Indonesia, the Patuha Geothermal Power Plant is a significant energy project driven by collaboration between Marubeni Corporation and Toshiba Energy Systems Corporation. Utilizing geothermal resources, the plant began operations in 2014. Initially, it operated with an output of approximately 55 megawatts, supplying enough electricity for the needs of around 150,000 households annually. Toshiba's high-efficiency geothermal steam turbines were implemented, achieving an annual reduction of 430,000 tons of CO2. Marubeni oversaw the entire project, and the generated electricity is supplied through Indonesia's state-owned power company, PLN.
Entering the 2020s, the Patuha Geothermal Power Plant realized further technological advancements and efficiency improvements. In 2022, Toshiba Energy Systems introduced an AI-powered predictive diagnostic system for operational anomalies, analyzing real-time operational data from the power plant. This innovation reduced the occurrence of malfunctions by over 20%, significantly enhancing equipment uptime. That same year, a paid diagnostic service through IoT was launched, further improving operational efficiency by reducing the number and duration of equipment downtimes.
Today, the Patuha Geothermal Power Plant stands as a symbolic presence in Indonesia's sustainable energy supply, contributing to the spread of renewable energy. The plant's operation is deeply integrated with Indonesia's state-owned geothermal company, PT Geo Dipa Energi (Persero), working in partnership with Toshiba Energy Systems to improve power generation efficiency and foster technological development.
The Patuha Geothermal Power Plant is regarded as a model case for similar projects in Indonesia's other geothermal-rich regions. Internationally, it contributes to the promotion of renewable energy adoption, serving as a successful example of initiatives aimed at combating global warming and achieving energy independence, earning global recognition.
