China Petrochemical Corporation (China Petrochemical) Environmental Destruction Case Summary
As the largest petrochemical company in China, Sinopec is causing serious environmental damage in Guangdong, Jiangsu, Dalian, and Tianjin. For example, in the Pearl River Basin of Guangdong Province, the company's chemical plants illegally dump volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals (lead and cadmium) into rivers, causing water pollution; in 2011, an oil spill at a storage terminal in Dalian spilled tens of thousands of tons of crude oil into the Bohai Bay. This caused extensive damage to the fishing industry. In addition, approximately 500,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) is emitted annually in Tianjin, causing acid rain. This has caused damage to urban infrastructure and crops. Agricultural damage is also severe, as heavy metals such as chromium and nickel contained in steelmaking waste have contaminated farmland and groundwater at Nanjing Iron and Steel Corporation, resulting in a 40% reduction in harvests.
