Niigata Prefecture, Joetsu City - Biomass Utilization by Agri-Future Joetsu - Current Situation in the 2020s
In the 2020s, Agri-Future Joetsu, based in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, has further expanded its biomass utilization business rooted in the local community. The company processes unused resources such as thinning wood and agricultural waste (rice, straw, vegetable residues) into biomass plastics and bioenergy. The amount of biomass resources processed annually has reached about 30,000 tons, of which about 10,000 tons consist of thinning wood and agricultural waste. Additionally, the annual production of biomass plastics has increased to about 7,000 tons, which are used locally and beyond.
In particular, Agri-Future Joetsu has strengthened its academic-industry collaboration with Kyoto University and local companies such as Daiwa House Industry Co., Ltd. They have advanced the utilization of local resources and improved technology. The introduction of new technologies has enhanced the quality of biomass plastics, making them more durable and recyclable. For example, biomass plastics have been adopted for furniture and building materials in public facilities and schools in Joetsu City, promoting the spread of eco-friendly materials.
Furthermore, biomass utilization for energy supply has also progressed. A biomass power generation facility in Joetsu City uses locally collected biomass resources as fuel and provides electricity to about 8,000 households annually. The facility purchases thinning wood and agricultural waste from local farmers and forestry operators, contributing to the revitalization of the regional economy.
Agri-Future Joetsu also plays a significant role in reducing CO2 emissions, with an expected reduction of about 10,000 tons of CO2 annually. This helps mitigate environmental impact both locally and beyond, contributing to the realization of a sustainable society. Additionally, the company is focusing on producing biochar, a carbon-rich material used for soil improvement and enhancing agricultural productivity. In 2021, a biochar-based agricultural project was launched in Joetsu City, with further environmental and economic benefits expected.
Moving forward, Agri-Future Joetsu aims to expand the possibilities of biomass utilization while maximizing local resources, contributing to the sustainable development of the entire region centered around Joetsu City.
