67-Overview of Afforestation Projects in Nigeria and Kenya-short-February 2000-Explanation of Environmental Issues

67-Overview of Afforestation Projects in Nigeria and Kenya-short-February 2000-Explanation of Environmental Issues Since 2000, Norway has led afforestation projects in Nigeria and Kenya, successfully balancing regional economic development with environmental protection. In Nigeria, forest restoration in Edo and Kaduna states has mitigated flooding and soil erosion while creating 52,000 jobs. Furthermore, through the NEWMAP project, 100,000 hectares of forest have been restored, leading to a 20% increase in agricultural productivity. In Kenya, reforestation around Nairobi National Park and the Masai Mara Reserve has been linked to the tourism industry, contributing to the local economy. Additionally, 5,000 hectares of coastal mangrove forests have been restored, improving the ecosystem. Ricoh’s low-energy irrigation system supports the cultivation of seedlings in arid regions. The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 100,000 tons annually by 2030 and is working to establish sustainable management systems within local communities.
