The Expansion of Renewable Energy – Brazil – From the 2000s to the 2020s In Brazil, the adoption of renewable energy is progressing, with renewable sources accounting for approximately 80% of the country’s energy supply. Small-scale hydroelectric and biomass power generation were promoted in the 2000s, while wind and solar power expanded in the 2010s. In particular, the “São Gonçalo Solar Park” is the largest of its kind in South America and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 1.4 million tons annually. In the 2020s, led by EneGreenPower and the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), efforts to diversify the energy mix are advancing, with the goal of achieving a 90% renewable energy share. Meanwhile, environmental impacts associated with dam construction in the Amazon region remain a challenge, and attention is turning to distributed power generation and the development of biomass technologies. Through these initiatives, Brazil aims to balance the prevention of global warming with economic growth.
