History of Port Development and Environmental Improvement at Shiogama Port, Miyagi Prefecture - April 2002 to November 2024 In 2002, a "purification-type revetment" utilizing microbial membranes was introduced at the port in the Mukaiyo district of Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture. This advanced water quality improvement through the decomposition of nitrogen compounds and phosphates. This technology improved the growth environment for scallops and oysters, revitalizing the fishing industry. Nippon Suigyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. participated in the revetment construction, using gravel with a diameter of 5070mm. Monitoring was also continued to assess the impact on Matsushima Bay. In the 2020s, the reorganization and reactivation of aging facilities in Shiogama Port Area progressed, strengthening logistics functions. Furthermore, based on the "Shiogama Port Renaissance 21 Plan," Marine Gate Shiogama was constructed and functions as a passenger terminal and tourism hub. Simultaneously,
redevelopment of the inner harbor area is underway. In collaboration with the national government, Miyagi Prefecture, and Nippon Suigyo Kogyo, the formation of a coastal exchange hub is progressing. These initiatives, aiming for harmony between the environment and the economy, are making a significant contribution to regional development.
