Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals Leaching from PVC Products - Summary
In 2001, concerns arose that diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) leaching from PVC-made IV tubing and infusion bags could cause health hazards as an endocrine disruptor. Particularly serious impacts were feared for newborns and patients with chronic diseases, prompting the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare to initiate investigations. The use of alternative materials like polyethylene and polypropylene gained traction, and the European Union (EU) regulated DEHP.
By the 2020s, DEHP-free products were introduced at Boston Children's Hospital and Heidelberg University Hospital, but regulations lag in developing countries. While companies like Sumitomo Chemical and BASF developed alternatives, improving medical product safety, increased costs remain a challenge. Going forward, ensuring safe supply and strengthening international cooperation are essential.
