History and Current Status of Shell Recycling Technology in Aomori City

History and Current Status of Shell Recycling Technology in Aomori City In 1997, “Scallop Tiles”—made from recycled scallop shells—were developed in Aomori City and utilized in public facilities and other settings to take advantage of their water permeability and moisture retention properties. This technology contributed to waste reduction and the revitalization of the local economy. In the 2020s, “HOTAMET” and the new material “SHELLTEC,” both made from scallop shells, were developed, achieving CO₂ reduction and improved strength. Additionally, “Scallop Trapezoids,” used as a substitute for sand, contribute to the improvement of the marine environment. These initiatives aim to reduce environmental impact and realize a sustainable society.
