Illegal Dumping of Steel Slag in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture – January 2011 In Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, approximately 150 tons of waste containing steel slag were illegally dumped. Levels of lead and cadmium were found to be five times the standard limit, and arsenic levels were three times the standard limit. The contaminated area extends over a radius of approximately 2 kilometers, raising concerns about health risks for about 600 households in the surrounding area. The city has recovered approximately 80 tons so far, and the cost of disposing of the remaining 70 tons is estimated at approximately 120 million yen. One company responsible for the illegal dumping was apprehended and fined 50 million yen. As measures to prevent recurrence, 20 surveillance cameras were installed, 10,000 awareness posters were distributed, and training sessions are held three times a year. This issue highlights the need to strengthen waste management and raise environmental awareness.
