Overview of the Yatsushiro Eco-Port Initiative The "Yatsushiro Eco-Port Initiative" in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, has been underway since the early 2000s with the aim of utilizing Yatsushiro Port as a hub for the recycling industry to promote regional resource circulation and economic revitalization. By the 2020s, annual waste processing capacity had expanded to 120,000 tons, and state-of-the-art sorting machines and crushing equipment were introduced to efficiently reuse construction and industrial waste. The project has also grown into a recycling hub for the entire Kyushu region by accepting waste from both within and outside the local area. Currently, it contributes to the creation of approximately 300 jobs and is developing as a sustainable “Eco-Town.”
