Overview of the Methane Gas Utilization Project at the Central Breakwater Landfill (as of 2024)

Overview of the Methane Gas Utilization Project at the Central Breakwater Landfill (as of 2024) Since 2015, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been recovering approximately 15,000 tons of methane gas annually from the landfill located on the inner side of the Central Breakwater and using it to generate electricity. This power plant supplies electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 10,000 households, and since 2018, the waste heat has also been utilized. Efficient power generation is achieved using technology from Hitachi Zosen Corporation, and Tokyo Gas began a demonstration project for city gas supply in 2020. Equipment was also installed at the outer landfill in 2022, with a goal set to increase the gas recovery rate from 70% to over 90% by 2030. This project is part of the “Zero Emission Tokyo Strategy” and is attracting attention as a model case both domestically and internationally.
