The company has also introduced environmentally friendly processing technologies and adopted a system that renders medical waste harmless before disposal. In 2022, the company properly processed approximately 100 tons of infectious medical waste annually, thereby contributing to the safety of the local community and environmental protection. Furthermore, Kitakyushu City, as an “Environmental Future City,” is promoting the development of the recycling industry and environmental technologies. The city is home to a cluster of companies specializing in recycling technologies for industrial waste, including medical waste, with firms such as Ecosystem Kitakyushu providing innovative processing technologies. The company has developed technology to break down and reuse plastics in waste, expanding its processing capacity to 50,000 tons per year. Thanks to the technological capabilities of such companies, an increase in the recycling rate of medical waste is anticipated. However, particularly regarding medical waste from home care, collaboration with citizens and medical institutions remains a challenge. Many citizens are unaware of the proper disposal methods for items such as syringes and medication containers, often discarding them as general waste, which continues to pose environmental and safety risks. The city holds informational sessions on proper waste disposal several times a year and conducts awareness campaigns through pamphlet distribution and social media, but it is expected to take further time to achieve effective dissemination. The issue of medical waste in Kitakyushu is a critical challenge that requires a unified effort among businesses, citizens, and the government, alongside the development of the city’s environmental industry.
