The Shadow of Superintelligence Assumption - The Premonition of Ontological Crisis (2025)
The debate over super intelligence is based on the strong premise that humanity will face a crisis at the level of civilization if artificial intelligence, far smarter than humans, is created. This is not just a story of technological progress, but an ontological question about the future. Throughout our long history, humans have outstripped other creatures in the power of civilization, but when that position is shaken and we are confronted with more advanced intelligence ourselves, there is a possibility that the dominant side will now be forced into subservience. These ideas are being seriously considered at the forefront of artificial intelligence research and futurology.
At the core of this debate is the composition of artificial intelligence, in which intelligence is explosively improved through repeated self-improvement. This is the so-called "intelligence explosion" or "singularity," a view that suggests the possibility of an exponential increase in performance once a certain threshold is exceeded. As this phenomenon progresses, AI will make decisions and take actions that are beyond human understanding and control, and there is a risk that our predictions and safeguards will cease to function.
It is also important to note that greater intelligence does not necessarily mean that it will naturally possess a sense of ethics and good intentions. Artificial intelligence behaves according to a given objective function and reward design, so the slightest deviation in goal setting can have irreversible consequences. The "paperclip-optimized AI" thought experiment illustrates the extreme consequences of a simple directive that could turn the resources of the entire universe into paperclips. While this is a metaphorical example, it symbolizes the difficulty of setting objectives and designing ethics.
Although the perspective of ontological risk is sometimes treated with skepticism by some researchers, these risks cannot be ignored. Serious discussions are underway among policy makers and scientists around the world about the safety and controllability of AI. International expert groups and research institutions are developing guidelines and research funding frameworks for AI safety, and have identified a set of issues, including "ontological risks," as key challenges for the future.
It is undetermined when and how super intelligence will actually emerge, but if such intelligence does emerge, it could fundamentally change the fate of humanity and the shape of civilization itself. Multilayered risky assumptions, including the difficulty of shared values, the limitations of ethical design, and the uncertainty of control technologies, are the foundation of current AI research and future predictions. We need to face this topic with an eye on both ontological questions and concrete technological risks.
