Environmental Conservation and Agricultural Support by Sorgo - November 2006
Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, is planting sorghum around eggplant fields to prevent the intrusion of flying pesticides and reduce damage from strong winds. The honeysuckle beetles that congregate on sorghum prey on aphids, a pest of eggplant, and contribute to a reduction in the use of pesticides. This method is highly regarded as part of biological pest control and is also helping to support local agriculture. It has also contributed to improving the quality and increasing the demand for Senshu mizu nasu, and is helping to promote environmentally friendly agriculture.
