History and Current Status of Illegal Logging in the Amazon Rainforest
Since the 1990s, illegal logging has expanded in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. Logging for the purpose of expanding farmland and pastureland, especially in the states of Pará and Rondonia, has progressed, resulting in the loss of approximately 13,000 square kilometers of forest annually by 2021. Illegal logging is traded on the international market, especially for wood such as mahogany and ipée, and has a serious environmental impact. The loss of forests results in the emission of about 4,000,000 tons of greenhouse gases per year and is increasing soil degradation and damage to ecosystems. Meanwhile, Amazon, H&M, and other companies are supporting forest protection through the purchase of carbon credits. The Brazilian government is strengthening monitoring with the satellite "Detector," but the challenge is to reconcile environmental policy with economic interests.
