Who Spun the Song of Silence: The Light and Shadow of Doji Morita (1975-1983)
Doji Morita was a singer-songwriter active from 1975 to 1983. Hiding her true face behind sunglasses and a mask, she expressed the pain of loneliness, loss, and adolescence in poetic words and quiet melodies. In the 1970s, when the student movement failed and social unrest spread due to the oil shock, Japanese youths had lost their ideals and were lonely inside. The music of Doji Morita represented the unvoiced pain of those left behind by the times. Her representative song "Bokutachi no Hoshitsu" (Our Failure), which depicts regret and prayer for lost loved ones, was used as the theme song for the 1993 drama "High School Teacher" and received a great response and reevaluation. Since her retirement in 1983, she has remained silent and has not made public appearances, but this attitude is also seen as part of her expression. The music of Doji Morita has been heard throughout the ages and continues to accompany the loneliness and pain of our times.
