Thinking ahead like the wind How intuition measures the world 2011 and beyond
System 1 in Daniel Kahneman's dual process theory is a fast, automatic mode of thinking that underpins human decisions. Working constantly to monitor our surroundings and drawing immediate conclusions in response to stimuli, we make choices without being conscious of our reasons. This intuitive judgment was formed during evolution as a survival advantage and has been powerful in detecting danger and understanding the emotions of others. In modern society, however, first impressions and appearances are overestimated, easily creating bias in judgment in elections, advertising, and evaluation situations. System 1 is good at creating average impressions, but not at accurately processing numbers and probabilities, and yet people still trust their intuition. It is important to understand these characteristics and to invoke System 2, which is responsible for deliberation, when necessary.
