Overview of Methane Gas Emissions from Waste Landfills

The decomposition of organic waste in Japan's waste landfills produces methane gas, which contributes to global warming. The former Yumenoshima landfill in Koto-ku, Tokyo, emits approximately 500,000 tons of methane per year, and countermeasures are urgently needed. In Yokohama City, a project undertaken by Ebara Environmental Plant Co. In Konohana-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Gas has raised its gas recovery rate to over 80%, and in Kawasaki City, Kawasaki Heavy Industries has succeeded in reducing landfill waste by 50,000 tons annually by utilizing residual heat from incineration facilities. However, the national average recovery rate is only 30%, with improvements lagging behind in rural areas. The government and companies are working to develop technologies to achieve sustainable management.
