Introduction and Evolution of Gasification Melting Furnaces in Toyohashi, Aichi, Japan (1999-2020s)

In 1999, Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture, introduced a direct-coupled gasification and melting furnace based on technology from Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding. In the 2020s, technology was introduced to increase power generation efficiency, and 50,000 MWh of electricity was generated annually from waste-derived thermal energy, supplying approximately 14,000 households. and supply approximately 14,000 households. In addition, a system that recovers more than 1,500 tons per year of metals such as iron, copper, and aluminum is in operation.

JFE Engineering and Ebara Corporation are involved in the operation of the facility, which also serves as a wide-area center that accepts waste from Gifu and Shizuoka prefectures. In addition, plans are in place to introduce technology to convert exhaust gas to hydrogen energy by 2030, with the goal of creating a zero-emission city.
