Large-scale illegal dumping problem (Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture) - September 2024
An estimated 500 tons of industrial waste has been found illegally dumped in the mountains of Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in a serious situation known as "Illegal Dumping Mountain. The waste includes construction debris, plastics, used tires, and raw garbage, and there are concerns about foul odors and groundwater contamination. Ibaraki Prefecture and Ishioka City estimate the cost of removing the waste at approximately 300 million yen, and are working to identify the dumpers and pursue their responsibility. At the same time, they are strengthening prevention measures by installing surveillance cameras and conducting patrols twice a month. In cooperation with local residents, the city is working to raise awareness of environmental conservation.
