Environmental Damage from Urban Flooding (1990s-2020s)-May 1996
Since the 1990s, urban flooding has become more frequent in many parts of Japan, leading to the development of rainwater reuse and storage facilities. In the 2000s, the Metropolitan Area Outer Discharge Channel was put into operation, preventing large-scale flood damage. From the 2010s onward, heavy rains due to climate change increased, and Tokyo and Fukuoka City introduced additional rainwater management technologies. 2020s: Osaka expanded its storage tanks and deployed rainwater filtration systems in cooperation with Daikin Industries. While disaster preparedness is evolving nationwide, adaptation to climate change is a key issue.
