History and Current Status of Septic Tank Installation in Japan: Progress and Issues from 1990s to 2020s
In the 1990s, the installation of septic tanks began in Japan, and ordinances and plans in the Lake Kojima area in Okayama Prefecture and the Yoro River basin in Chiba Prefecture promoted the improvement of local water quality; in the 2000s, advanced treatment septic tanks were developed by Fujikleen Industries and Kubota Corporation, and nitrogen and phosphorus removal technology became widespread. By the 2020s, the number of septic tanks installed nationwide will reach 7516864, 35.6% of which are advanced treatment type, but regional disparities and maintenance issues remain. Further technological innovation and promotion will be required in the future.
