Illegal Dumping Situation and Measures in Japan in FY2023

The Ministry of the Environment conducts an annual survey on the illegal dumping of industrial waste in Japan.

According to the latest survey results for FY2023, newly identified cases of illegal dumping are as follows
- Number of illegal dumping cases: 100 (down 34 cases from the previous year)
- Illegal dumping amount: 42,000 tons (-0.7 thousand tons from the previous year)

The number of remaining cases of illegal dumping as of the end of FY2023 is as follows.
- Remaining cases: 2,876 (up 21 cases from the previous year)
- Remaining amount: 1,012,000 tons (down 23,000 tons from the previous year)

These data are based on press releases by the Ministry of the Environment.

These statistics show that although the number of cases of illegal dumping and the amount of dumping are on the decrease, many cases still remain. The Ministry of the Environment is strengthening its efforts to prevent illegal dumping, detect it early, and prevent its expansion. In cooperation with prefectures and government ordinance-designated cities, the Ministry is also promoting appropriate measures by strengthening monitoring activities and dispatching experts. These efforts are expected to further reduce illegal dumping and protect the environment.
