Unprocessed Waste in Guangdong Province, China
In the early 2000s, Guangdong Province in China was a region undergoing rapid industrialization as a global export center. The electronics and electrical industries and the sewing industry were concentrated in the area, generating enormous amounts of waste in both urban and rural areas. After the SARS epidemic in 2003, economic recovery became the top priority, and environmental measures took a backseat. Chronic contamination of soil and water systems was becoming fixed as ecological destruction, forming soil that would surface later in life as serious health hazards and agricultural land degradation.
