The Role of Naoshima's Industrial Waste Disposal Facility - December 2003
An intermediate treatment facility is now in operation in the town of Naoshima, Kagawa Prefecture, to accept industrial waste illegally dumped on Teshima for treatment. Approximately 510,000 tons of auto parts, scrap metal, and other waste materials transported from Teshima are planned to be processed at Naoshima's incineration and melting facility, and full-scale processing has already begun in September 2003.
The Naoshima facility is equipped with the latest technology to minimize environmental impact, including a system to recover the heat energy generated during waste incineration and sophisticated filters to control the emission of hazardous substances. Through these efforts, the company aims to achieve both environmental conservation and efficient resource recycling.
In addition, Naoshima Island is already attracting attention as an environmental model district in the Seto Inland Sea region, and is expected to continue to make advanced efforts toward the proper disposal of industrial waste. The treatment project is scheduled to be completed in FY2012, and is being carried out as a long-term environmental restoration project.
