Food Waste Recycling Issues in Tokyo - November 2002

Food Waste Recycling Issues in Tokyo - November 2002

In Japan, approximately 19 million tons of food waste is generated annually, with about 9 million tons coming from business establishments and 10 million tons from households, especially in urban areas such as Tokyo and Osaka. The recycling rate of this waste is low, and most of it is incinerated or disposed of in landfills, creating an environmental impact problem. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is attempting to reuse some food waste as biogas through methane fermentation, but the infrastructure is not yet in place nationwide.

In addition, a project to recycle food waste is underway in Koto Ward in collaboration with major companies such as Aeon and 7-Eleven. This is reinforcing efforts to reuse waste as organic fertilizer and animal feed. The future goal is to achieve a 30% recycling rate by 2020, but technical and cost challenges remain, and further cooperation from the government and businesses is needed.
