What the Waste Mountain Tells Us" - The Environmental Crisis in Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture

A large amount of industrial waste has been illegally dumped in the Komi district of Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and is being viewed as an "illegal dumping mountain" problem. The waste, estimated at over 12,000 cubic meters, includes construction waste, waste plastic, and used tires, and there are growing concerns about foul odors and groundwater contamination. Ibaraki Prefecture and the city have begun removing the waste through administrative enforcement at a cost of approximately 330 million yen, and are taking steps to prevent a recurrence, such as installing surveillance cameras and strengthening patrols. Ishioka City has had illegal dumping problems in the past, and approximately 1 million tons of illegal dumping has been confirmed annually nationwide. Effective countermeasures are required, following the successful example of Fuji City in Shizuoka Prefecture. Since illegal dumping not only destroys the environment but also affects the local economy, it is essenti
al that residents and the government work together to take immediate action.
