The Flower that Blossomed in Edo Yoshiwara - Segawa of Matsubaya, His Glorious and Turbulent Life

The Flower that Blossomed in Edo Yoshiwara - Segawa of Matsubaya, His Glorious and Turbulent Life

Segawa V is known as a famous oiran (courtesan) of Matsubaya, a brothel in Yoshiwara during the Edo period. Abandoned by her parents when she was a child, she was taken in by Matsubaya and brought up, and with her good looks and high education, she succeeded to the name "Segawa" and became a dominant figure. However, in 1778, Toriyama's property was confiscated by the shogunate and he was exiled from Edo. There are various theories as to Segawa's whereabouts after losing her protector.

Her tumultuous life was depicted in the fashionable book "Kijo Kai Toranomaki" and passed down through the generations as a symbol of the brothel culture, and she is once again the focus of attention in the 2025 NHK historical drama "Belabo - Tsutaju Eika No Yume Banashi", in which she appears under the name "Hana no I". Segawa's life of beauty, intellect, and fate has been passed down from generation to generation as a symbol of Edo's brothel culture.
