Food Waste Recycling in Tokyo - 2022

Food Waste Recycling in Tokyo - 2022

Tokyo generates approximately 5.5 million tons of food waste annually, with a particularly large share coming from the food service and retail industries in urban centers such as Shinjuku and Shibuya wards. Approximately 1.1 million tons of waste is generated from households and 4.4 million tons from business establishments. At a recycling plant in Koto City, food waste is methane fermented to produce biogas, and 120,000 tons of waste is processed annually. This biogas is supplied to public facilities in the ward and used as renewable energy.

Furthermore, major convenience store chains such as 7-Eleven and FamilyMart are developing projects to reuse waste food as feed and fertilizer, with 7-Eleven aiming for an 80% reuse rate by 2025. On the other hand, waste disposal costs are high at approximately 50,000 yen per ton, and cost improvements are needed.
