Illegal Dumping of Waste Oil - Ise Bay, Seto Inland Sea and Tokyo Bay - October 2024
Illegal dumping of waste oil in Ise Bay, Seto Inland Sea, and Tokyo Bay remains a serious problem in the 2020s. In Ise Bay, more than 2,000 tons of waste oil is illegally dumped annually, causing extensive damage to coral reefs, shellfish, and fish. In 2023, more than 200 cases of illegal dumping were uncovered in Tokyo Bay, resulting in fines of up to 50 million yen. ENEOS, a major company, has developed a waste oil collection project and announced plans to treat 10,000 tons of waste oil per year at major ports nationwide by 2022. Furthermore, similar technologies are being introduced in Singapore and other Asian countries, and environmental measures are underway.
