67-Summary of afforestation projects in Nigeria and Kenya-Short-February 2000-Environmental Issues Commentary
In Nigeria and Kenya, Norwegian-led reforestation projects have been underway since 2000, combining local economic development with environmental protection. In Nigeria, reforestation in Edo and Kaduna states has reduced flooding and soil erosion and created 52,000 jobs. In addition, 100,000 hectares of forest have been reforested through the NEWMAP project, increasing agricultural productivity by 20%.
In Kenya, reforestation around Nairobi National Park and the Masai Mara Reserve has been linked to tourism and contributed to the local economy. 5,000 hectares of coastal mangrove forests have also been reforested, improving the ecosystem. Ricoh's low-energy irrigation system is helping to grow seedlings in arid areas. The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 100,000 tons per year by 2030 and to establish a sustainable management system for the local community.
