Illegal Dumping of Industrial Waste in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture - January 2011
Illegal dumping of industrial waste by a local waste disposal company was uncovered in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture. In 2010, two companies were caught and fined 40 million yen and 45 million yen. The city has collected 150 tons of waste and estimated 150 million yen for restoration costs. In addition, the installation of 15 surveillance cameras, distribution of 7,000 copies of educational posters, and implementation of environmental seminars four times a year have resulted in a 20% decrease in the number of incidents compared to the previous year. The importance of proper disposal and environmental protection has been reaffirmed.
